Senior Projects in New Media 2009 | site

Capstone course for students in their final term graduating with a degree in New Media. I designed the syllabus and interactive systems. This was a culminating experience, a space where students developed their area(s) of special interest by integrating learned knowledge and skills toward development and production of their independent senior thesis projects. In addition to their new media/art orientation, most projects included aspects of community involvement and participation or public intervention. The course involved class seminars, online discussions and intensive individual supervision. Students received extensive and regular individual feedback throughout the course from myself as well as from other faculty with expertise related to their project at the alpha phase. Evaluation was based on set deliverables and final project. Students directly participated in evaluation. Enrollment: 21.

Theory and Practice of New Media (4th year) 2008 | site

Course explored the intersections of critical media studies and art theory with a focus on analysis of diverse New Media practices in preparation for senior thesis projects. I designed the syllabus, assignments and open-source systems, including discussion boards and assignment wikis. Student interacted in class and online and received regular individual supervision and consultation as they worked on comprehensive proposals for their graduating projects. Evaluation was based on written assignments, process work and the finished proposal. Enrollment: 21.

Understanding Digital Art 2004-07 | summer2007 | summer2006 | 2005-06 | 2004-05

This 6-credit elective course was taught both as a full year and as a 6-week summer intensive course. It introduced students to contexts, examples, histories and theories of diverse practices in "digital art," with the aim of making them conversant about the subject and able to analyze, contextualize and ultimately evaluate artworks. I fully designed the curriculum, assignments and open-source systems, including discussion boards and assignment wikis (first use at York U) and wrote and produced all hyperlinked lectures. Guest artist presentations and exhibition visits were built in the course. Student interactions were facilitated in online tutorials. Evaluation was based on written assignments and online discussions. The course website and systems were used repeatedly by the Technology Enhanced Learning staff to demonstrate the use of open source applications in online course designs. Varried enrollment: 50-130.

Spreading the Word: Knowledge, Culture, Technology 2004-07 | 2006-07 | 2005-06 | 2004-05

This course was team-taught with Jennifer Cypher. It was a required full-year, 9-credit foundations course that emphasized development of critical reading/writing skills while examining the historical and contemporary role of information and communication technologies – including art media – in the production and dissemination of culture and knowledge. I developed, designed and administered open-source online components including discussion boards. The course employed 2-6 teaching assistants. Students attended lectures and tutorials. Evaluation was based on written and oral assignments and essay exams. Varied enrollment: 70-225.

Time-Based Art: Crossing Boundaries 2006-09 | site

I taught several sessions of this half-year 3-credit required course for Visual Arts students majoring in time-based art. Designed around three projects, the course guided the students through conceptual and practical processes in digital text-image, video production, site-specific, interventionist and performance practices. I fully redesigned the syllabus and assignments, and devised and implemented online components. The course incorporated technical workshops in HTML, Photoshop, IMovie and encouraged students to take on an active role in developing their technical knowledge. Regular exploration of artwork and artists, proposal development, discussion and critique were integral to students' work. Evaluation was based on process work, finished projects, presentations and participation. The course employed 1-2 studio instructors. Course enrollment: 40-60, sections of 20.

Introduction to New Media Art 2007

As studio instructor, I gave technical workshops in HTML, CSS, Photoshop and JavaScript, and guided students through creative ideation, planning and production of interactive new media art including web-based text-image narratives, 2-channel live mixing of sound, text, still and animated image, and code mixing as creative production. Screen-Based Fluid Interfaces 2006 | site

I redesigned the existing syllabus for this 3rd-year 3-credit elective course that engaged in creative consideration and experimentation with online interfacing of media/aesthetic rich components (Shockwave and Flash) with open-source social software (blogs, bulletin boards, wikis). I adapted and workshoped existing technical examples. Students developed projects through critical discussions and creative ideation and received extensive feedback throughout development and production. Student projects were included in the Department’s showcase. Evaluation was based on process work, presentations, participation and final projects. Enrollment: 20.

Introduction to Electronic Art 2004 | site

I redesigned existing syllabus and taught this 2nd-year 3-credit elective course in time-based art stream. The course focused on exploration of silent and sound video as narrative media for screening, installation or online platforms. I gave technical workshops in image capture, lighting, and image and sound editing using iMovie, Peak, FinalCut Pro, and designed and produced online components including discussion board. Classes included discussions of artwork and theory/analysis. Evaluation was based on process documents, presentations, participations and projects. The course employed two studio instructors. Introduction to Multimedia 1998-2004

As studio instructor, I performed technical demonstrations in HTML, Photoshop, JavaScript, Premiere, Director in this 2nd-year 6-credit studio course required for New Media and Design majors. I also guided students through creative ideation, planning and production of web-based text, image, video and sound narrative, and interactive multimedia art for web and disk-based authored in Director environment. I delivered lectures and technical demonstrations focusing on theoretical/conceptual development and production processes, and facilitated group discussions and small-group projects.
